Here Are Foods To Help You Get Some Zzz's
Carbohydrate-rich foods can enhance sleep. That's because they trigger the brain to release a neurotransmitter known as serotonin, which produces a feeling of relaxation. Graham crackers with honey, a slice of toast with jam or low-fat popcorn are serotonin-enhancing snacks. Tryptophan, an amino acid found in turkey, chicken and dairy foods, also promotes the secretion of serotonin, and, according to Judith Wurtman, a nutrition researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, combining tryptophan-containing foods with starches is even more effective. The proverbial glass of warm milk contains tryptophan, and the warm liquid is soothing, which also may encourage sleep.
